In 2012, John Hoffman directed a documentary film to measure the United States of America (USA). The integral focus of the film is the increasing obesity in the USA due to different social and economic reasons. The Centres for Disease Control (CDC), Institute of Medicine (IM), and National Institute of Health (NIH) collaborated with Home Box Office (HBO) to produce the documentary film. The film attempted to disclose different reasons for the obesity pandemic among millennials (HBO). The overall documentary contains statistics of different neighborhoods, data shared by IM, NIH, and CDC, followed by reasons behind the mass increase in obesity. The producers also attempted to propose different solutions to control and cure obesity among average Americans, representing millennials (HBO).
The film initiates by reflecting on the reasons for obesity rise among millennials. The creators reflected that the lower and upper-middle-class neighborhoods are experiencing the torment of the pandemic more than upper-class society. The fundamental reason for obesity in such neighborhoods is accessibility to fast foods, junk, and snacks (HBO). Arguably, the lower and upper-middle-class societies have limited disposable income, more prominent families, and lesser access to organic foods. Besides, such families are more likely to save time by buying snacks and junk from the food street to earn more income through hourly jobs (HBO). As a result, obesity kept rising in such social groups nationwide.
Furthermore, the film featured a connection between ethnicity, social class, and gender while determining access to quality and healthy foods. The creators narrated that Hispanics and African-Americans are more infected by obesity than elite Americans. Women are more prominent representatives in the ethnic groups (HBO). Most women are single parents with multiple children to feed. As a result, fast food and junks are affordable and accessible food to serve the children with a limited income. Besides, the advertisements and hoarding displays are more evident in such neighborhoods than in prime locations. The food chains find a broader customer base in neighborhoods with lower and upper-middle-class people (HBO).
The food deserts were the critical focal point of the documentary. The creators discussed that most chocolates, confectionaries, and other savories influence the purchase decision of parents towards children.
