This article is a review of the ethical arguments regarding euthanasia and how they relate to nursing practice. The authors utilize a systematic search and narrative review to approach the issue. They search nine electronic databases and retrieve articles that relate to euthanasia and nursing ethics. Eventually, the researchers focus on 40 articles that were relevant to the subject. The analysis indicated that 23 of the articles provided arguments for and against euthanasia. 14 of the 23 articles highlighted the nursing standpoint while nine argued against other standpoints like societal consequences. The article demonstrates that nurses are critical in the day-to-day care of patients. The nature of nurse-patient relationship raises various ethical issues. Nurses bear the greatest responsibility of caring for critically ill patients. However, the same nurses have little power about making decisions that influence patient’s experiences especially on the issue of euthanasia. The article hence offers a range of positions for nurses to consider when reflecting their role in the context of euthanasia.

The authors acknowledge that different societies have different understandings regarding the ethical implications of euthanasia. They indicate that the issue of euthanasia remains one of the most vital questions facing modern societies. Despite the attempt to legalize euthanasia, few countries even in Western world have succeeded. Some societies, especially in the Eastern world like China, consider euthanasia as immoral because of the sanctity of human life. However, the emergence of more secular pluralistic societies has prompted the need to review euthanasia from the lens of personal autonomy and the right to self-determination. Hence, the authors argue that determining the morality of euthanasia depends largely on the beliefs of a particular society.
