Answering Questions
1. US regions show great diversity in many factors that make it challenging for our democratic system to change to improve US health. Choose three regions from among the 15 we covered and discuss the differences between them related to reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights. What common ground or similarities may help these regions to address the differences and improve our health?
The states of California, Washington, and Oregon have a lot of similarities in their adoption and acceptance of reproductive and LGBTQ rights. All three have laws that grant people the right to make decisions regarding birth control and abortion. The government cannot interfere in any way if people decide to make such decisions. The main difference between these three states is California’s liberalism. California is considered one of the most liberal states in the U.S. and it did not come as a shock that it was among the first to agree to LGBTQ rights.
The fact that these states recognize reproductive and LGBTQ rights can be used as the foundation for developing evidence-based policies that enhance healthcare outcomes for women and members of the LGBTQ community. Abortion and the rights of the LGBTQ community are among the most hotly contested topics in the U.S. Often, these debates often endanger the lives of those who are pro-abortion and pro-LGBTQ rights. However, in taking a step as a bloc that is aware of the challenges of these two groups of people, these three states could overshadow the anti-abortion and LGBTQ rights groups.
2. Identify and explain two factors that contribute to African American maternal mortality rates being four times higher than Caucasian maternal mortality rates in the US. Address how these factors persist even among highly educated African American mothers.
One factor that contributes to African American maternal mortality rates is poverty. The U.S. is highly unequal, and this means a significant percentage of the population cannot access even moderate healthcare. In the U.S., there is a large racial wealth gap that favors white Americans. In such unequal societies, Picket and Wilkinson (316) report that “health tended to be worse.” So, for African Americans, maternal mortality rates will continue to grow mainly because of the lack of capability to access great healthcare. For African Americans, chances are that their newborn children will either die at childbirth or that they will grow up without their mothers. The fear is real and as will be shown later, even those who are highly educated and have the capability to access great healthcare, the fears are similar.
Secondly, there is also the issue of race which continues to be a major issue in the U.S. Alesina and Glaeser (8) write that as the European countries fought to eradicate the idea of a fragmented society, the U.S. government saw no need to help its people overcome the insecurities that were created by the slavery era.
