The Spanish Civil War in For Whom the Bell Tolls
For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway was first published in 1940. The narrative was mainly influenced by the Spanish Civil War that happened during the previous decade. Hemingway was working as a correspondent in France and closely observed the development of the civil war during the reign of Alfonso XIII. The story centers on Robert Jordan, an American volunteer working with the Republican guerrilla during the Civil War era. Some of the novel characters are fictional, while others are actual figures who participated in the war. For Whom the Bell Tolls is one of the finest novels by Hemingway. Since the author experienced the action first hand, he uses his fiction novel to share the experiences and psychological pain that he underwent. When the war ended, it is believed that Hemingway had insomnia. Writing novels was a way to deal with the pain and reflect on the events during the war.
When Hemingway first visited Spain, he loved the country and occasionally visited to see the bullfights. He closely followed the conflict from the time it started. Throughout the story, we can see how he represents the war by showcasing how the Fascists and their war machinery operated. There were both moral and physical threats associated with the military abilities of the Fascists. It is also important to note that Hemingway worked as a propagandist during the war. He also served as a correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance, which gave me firsthand information about the war (Hemingway). The story is an expression of his emotions and experience about the war. He critiques the Republican side and their leadership. On the other hand, he also laments how the Fascists destroyed the life of the common people. The setting of the novel is after the end of the war in 1937. It is during this period that troops from Germany invaded Spain. This was when Paris was used as a staging arena for journalists to cover the events of the civil war (Writer).
The story is a description of the brutality that was experienced during the Spanish Civil War. The basis of the events we see through the story is from the author's experience as he worked as a correspondent. When Spain was first attacked, the Republicans still hoped to win and had arranged an offensive attack against their opponents. In this narration, the author tries to establish whether violence is justified under the circumstances that defined the Spanish Civil War.
For Whom the Bell Tolls is similar to other Hemingway novels, which presents a particular issue through the protagonist. Robert Jordan is the central figure which shows us the various demerits of civil wars. Using a journalistic style, the author reports the events and experiences during the strife, showing us the different sides and ills resulting from the action (Ruiz 105). Hemingway favored the poor people who were victims of war. Hemingway feels that killing is not ethical. “Toe me it is a sin to kill a man. Even Fascists, whom we must kill. To me there is a great difference between the bear and the man and I do not believe the wizardry o...
