Art and Gender
Art is a field through which many people have expressed their ideas, emotions, and even beliefs (Linda 1). It can be in the form of a painting, architecture, or sculpture. Art is significant in society because of its roles, which cut across personal, social, spiritual, and physical spheres. Psychologically, art functions as a medium for hope, appreciation, remembrance, rebalancing, growth, sorrow, and self-awareness. Modern art is a product of many advancements in history, the major one being gender equality or all-gender involvement in the practice of art (Linda 1). One fact that remains for sure is that art in itself has no gender, and anyone can make great art and be a great artist. This write-up assesses how gender equality has been effected in the field of art throughout history.
To express the idea of gender in art more explicitly, I made a painting of a man dressed in a black fitting suit standing against a yellow background, whose face I splashed with white paint. Well, this painting has a lot of significance, especially throughout the history of art, especially on issues relating to gender. Initially, the male gender full dominated the field of art. The people perceived that artists had to conform to both ideological and intellectual disciplines such as psychology, history, sociology, and philosophy, which is alright (Linda 1). However, this aspect closed out the female gender who was never given a chance to gain intellectual or academic knowledge, leaving the while male to rule in the field. As a result, the male viewpoint came to be regarded as belonging to great historians in the art (Linda 1).
This ideology continued for a long time despite opposition from intellectuals such as John Stuart Mill, who regarded it as a social injustice that was also opposed to intellectual standards (Linda 2). As feminism began to take root in the country, male weaknesses in art became exposed and instead, they revealed he had breached both intellectual and ideological codes of conduct. It was at that juncture that the woman began to be considered as a possible intellectual tool that could be used to bring a paradigm shift and as a result, do away with the radical stereotypic mindsets that men had previously established.
