Gender roles refer to the conceptions of masculinity and femininity. Families perform a significant role in defining the gender roles of men and women (Ghosh, 2015, p. 1). It is significant to recognize the definition of a family. The word family is defined in various ways by different researchers. Firstly, some researchers define a family as a group of two parents and their kids who live together (Wharton, 2009, p. 89). In the definition, these groups are related either by marriage as a husband and wife or by blood, for instance, children. Contrary, other groups define a family as a social group that shares some common factors such as cooperation, residence, and reproduction (Marks, Lam, and McHale, 2009, p. 228).
According to Murdock, Steel, Kidd, and brown, a family may also include two adults who are of the same sexes and maintains an approved sexual relationship. In this type of family, children are adopted and becomes part of that family. According to the Australian Bureau of statistics, a family can be made of two or more people who are above 15 years of age. These people can be related through a registered marriage, blood, fostering, or adoption (Beck-Gernsheim, 2002, p 18). On the other hand, some people believe that a family is a group of two or more people residing together. According to this definition, there is always one person who is the main shareholder (Marks, Lam, and McHale, 2009, p. 227). Moreover, in this definition, all the family members are related to each other either by legal marriage, blood, or adoption.
On the other hand, some researchers define a family is a collection of persons who share direct kin connections. These individuals take the obligation of caring for the offspring in the family (Cohen, 2018, p 32). Additionally, other people define family as a group of two or more people who segment on common goalmouths, visions, and missions. These people also share values and long-term commitments to each other. For instance, spouses share a common goal of living together through their lifetime, while parents commit themselves in caring for their children (Dempsey. and Lindsay, 2014, p. 21).
