In an article titled Gender, Aging, Health and Society, H. L. Dhar talks about different gender issues associated with aging. It has been found that women become elderly more than men and that osteoporosis and depression are the most common problems of the elderly. When men age, issues like hypogonadism, enlargement of the prostate and erectile dysfunction become evident in them, and when women age, problems like post-menopausal disturbance, lung and breast cancer and urinary incontinence can be found in them (Dhar, 2001). However, compared to males, females still have fewer problems and this leads them to have a prolonged and healthy life. Furthermore, the issues that are present in both male and female elderly and that need immediate attention or special care are falls, cognitive dysfunction, and malnutrition.
It’s safe to say that males and females suffer from some sorts of mental and physical problems throughout their lives, but these issues become more evident and out of control when they age. In general, the frequency of many health problems remains unnoticed or at a low level because young men and women have strong immune systems and bones. This leads them to face various problems in a better way. A time, however, comes when their bodies become weak or are unable to respond to different sorts of health problems and this is when they begin suffering severely or are hospitalized for a long time.
