Service to others is at the core of servant leadership. Its effectiveness differs across Western and African contexts. One cultural variable is gender egalitarianism. African and Western cultures differ in gender roles. Servant leadership promotes gender equity. Western cultures encourage it while in African cultures, treating women unfairly is prevalent. Another variable is power distance. Servant leadership fosters the sharing of power. African cultures have higher power distance than Western cultures (Whitfield, 2014). Most people accept the unequal distribution of power.
