Music in Film-2001: A Space Odyssey
The film 2001: A Space Odyssey is an epic science creative writing movie. Stanley Kubrick wrote and directed the movie. The film script is the work of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. The movie draws inspiration from The Sentinel, a short story by Clarke. The movie’s soundtrack comprises of works by various artists. However, this essay focuses on the composition Blue Danube by Johan Strauss.
Most of the compositions used in the film create a sense of time, imposing a rhythm for the on-screen narration, and hence have a temporal function. The Blue Danube in particular creates a rhythmic foundation of the movements of the characters and the objects. As the waltz flows, the movements of the spacecraft and the space station seems to move in harmony with the music’s tempo.
Further, the tempo of the composition creates a sense of tranquility in the movie. This tranquility is evident in the scene where Floyd sleeps comfortably during his space trip. During his sleep, the song plays in the background and appears to somewhat soothe him. When it would otherwise be very difficult to sleep under such conditions, Floyd finds comfort from the slow tempo of the music and sleeps safely and comfortably.
