It is very flexible to write an article about an instrument or a music style. There is no special restriction to quote quotes and then write your own analysis and opinion of quotation.
Writing style should be Chicago Manual of Style. 
Your topic cannot be on any of the instruments, musicians, cultures, or traditions that are extensively covered in lecture or in the required reading. Your research topic can include focus on an individual instrument, the music of a specific place or people, a specific musician or performer, or a local tradition. You must get approval of your topic from your TA no less than two weeks before the assignment is due!Research papers must be 1000-1250 words (4-5 double-spaced pages), not including a works cited/reference page. You must cite at least three outside (i.e. not the textbook) sources. Research papers will be graded upon the strength (or absence) of your thesis statement, organization, overall content, and grammar/spelling/punctuation. Papers must be formatted with one inch margins, 12-point New Time Roman font, and double-spaced. Failure to appropriately format your written assignment will result in one full letter grade, 10 points, being deducted from the assignment grade. Ask your TA how they would like you to submit your written assignments.
