Response to the Dorsky Сelluloid Piece Essay

Essay Instructions:

I'm asking y'all to read Nathaniel Dorsky's Devotional Cinema. Dorsky is a queer artist based in SF, a true cinephile in every regard, and the maker of some of the most visually sumptuous films you could ever set your eyes on. Unfortunately, he's also adamant that they be watched on film. Which means, alas, we cannot (I've never been able to track down a print to show in class in NY... they're in high demand and so few exist). But lucky for us, he's also a profoundly direct and beautiful writer too. Don't worry too much about the films/filmmakers he references (although many of them are truly beautiful works too)... that'd be missing the point though. Try to take what he's offering up... cinema as a form of religion itself (there is actually nothing remotely "religious" about this at all... if anything, you could probably call it sacrilege).
Your assignment for next week is just to draft a creative response to the Dorsky reading. This will not be shared with the class. Just for me. It can be literally any medium you want: a poem, essay, film, photo series, etc. Just keep it relatively short... like 1 min, 1 page, etc. And most of all... try to capture the spirit of his conjecture, not the letter of it.

He left a cinema and noticed that his insight had been irreversibly changed and made an act of seeing the progressions displayed after films. Furthermore, he observed that this force emerges from film's capacity to reflect and realign our metabolism.
Alchemy happens when the type of work includes the statement of its unique materialities, such as Egyptian sculptures, Bach and Mozart's music, twelfth-century French stained glass and stone etching, and cave paintings. Dorsky indicates that watching a film has massive magical ramifications. Cinema tends to be a method of drawing nearer and showing the indescribable (Dorsky...
