Deterritorialization in Japan

Essay Instructions:

1. Several authors speak of the concept of "deterritorialization." The term is in a sense a response to globalization and the effect it has on local and international culture. The basic concept boils down to the idea that the more international markets become, in terms of services, communication, cultural products etc. and the more exchange there is between nations, the more culture becomes the same, thus losing its locality. Depending on who you read this is both a positive and a negative phenomenon. However, since deterritorialization goes hand in hand with westernization, it is more often than not viewed in a negative light. The idea is that the more globalization takes over, the more local culture becomes lost, obstructed and cast aside.
While this may be true, and some cultures have indeed paid the price for it, Japan seems to have done something unique. It has figured out a way to use deterritorialization to its advantage. By employing tactics such as placelessness and timelessness, in their anime, manga, films, video games etc. they have succeeded in making it internationally popular. While they do indeed employ elements from all over the world (take Devil May Cry for example: the game uses mythical elements from Christianity, Norse legends, Japanese folklore, Indian epics, westerm architectural elements and Franch fashion), they somehow create entertainment/cultural products which cannot be mistaken as anything other than Japanese.
Why do you think that is and how do you think they have succeeded in making it happen? After all, this is a tactic that other nations and cultures reject vehemently.
2. I have posted a PowerPoint in the Documents section on Miyazaki; skim through it and watch any one of his movies of your choice. Then, answer the following questions:
What, in your opinion, makes Miyazaki's films so unique? What defines him as a director and animator? Why do you think Your Name was able to beat all his films at the box office? What did Makoto Shinkai bring to the screen that perhaps Miyazaki neglects in most of his works but is guaranteed to bring success?

Deterritorialization in Japan
Question 1
It is referred to as deterritorialization. Deterritorialization has led to increased exchange and transactions between nations hence the rapid loss of the local culture. This has both advantages and disadvantages in society. In most cases, this is viewed to be detrimental in the community as it erodes the local culture. Nevertheless, Japan has made use of Deterritorialization, and in the last two decades, it has been growing tremendously in terms of cultural products. This has been so because they have made use of timelessness and placelessness in their cultural products, such as manga, video games, and anime (Mikami 6).
With the social changes in society, the Japanese people have incorporated science and technology into their cultural products hence making the products lose the essence of time (Mikami 23). They have joined different cultures all over the world to create a new culture in their products, still with the basics of Japanese culture. Most countries have been reluctant to incorporate foreign cultures in their products in pursuit of conserving their indigenous culture. For example, in some Japanese actions movies, guns are used. Karate is also incorporated in these movies. This shows how Japan has been able to integrate different cultures in their film industry. The use of the gun-fu style and use of firearms as an artistic style has made these films popular around the world. Japan has also been able to incorporate innovative technique...
