Within the first two decades of the twentieth century, the First World War destroyed many parts of Europe more so in Russia where decades of civil war gave birth to communism. This was a time where the radical changes altered all aspects of human life, socially, culturally, economically and politically. Amidst these changes, the visual art design also experienced a series of creative revolutions, with artists questioning the traditional approaches of art and design (Philip and Purvis 269).
The long-held traditional artistic value and approaches of organizing space and the role of art and design were seen to be shattered, artistic representation failed to impress the emerging European artists. Various elements and ideas of color form; expression of the Freudian theories was the main focus on the traditional art form. Dramatic social shifts impacted on arts that changed the face of graphic design. Suprematism, De Stijl, and constructivism rejected the traditional representation of art moving towards geometric abstraction (Erjavec 53).
Suprematism emerged in Russia in 1913 based on pure geometric form and color, rejecting pictorial art. Suprematism believed in an intuitive organization of art. Constructivism also emerged after the Russian revolution in 1917 and believed that art and design should represent the new communist ideologies (Dukhan131).
Constructivism followed the three principles of tectonic that promoted the unification of communist ideology combined with visual texture emphasizing on industrial production and lastly constructivism key principle was the principle of construction (Philip and Purvis 293). Similarly, De Stijl is a movement founded in the Netherlands in 1917 known as “the style” which included abstract, a geometric style based on a horizontal and vertical comparison that used primary colors (Dukhan 136).
Why Constructivism, Suprematism, and De Stijl arose simultaneously but separately
Suprematism is an art movement founded by Kashmir Malevich in Russia in 1915 and the term Suprematism is known as the art of supremacy of pure artistic expression rejecting the visual expression of objects. The art form focused on geometric forms like squares, line, rectangles with a limited range of color (Eburne 124). Malevich‘s core concept of Suprematism was to express dominance of pure and creative art (Eburne 117).
