Within the first two decades of the twentieth century, the First World War destroyed many parts of Europe more so in Russia where decades of civil war gave birth to communism. This was a time where the radical changes altered all aspects of human life, socially, culturally, economically and politically. Amidst these changes, the visual art design also experienced a series of creative revolutions, with artists questioning the traditional approaches of art and design (Philip and Purvis 269).
The long-held traditional artistic value and approaches of organizing space and the role of art and design were seen to be shattered, artistic representation failed to impress the emerging European artists.
