Assignment #2 Music, Song or Instrument from Latin America in a New Context
Provide a trajectory development either on a specific instrument, musical form, or song that has traveled and re-established a new context of practice in another location outside of its location of origin. This assignment is a research project, so you will have to find sources to support your claims, so please cite your sources.
Identify the entity - music form, song or instrument:
If Music Form or Song: What is the name of the music form (genre/style) ? From where does the entity originate? Describe the characteristics of the music form: what is the style, rhythmic form, meter? Is it sung, is solo or chorus singing, what language, is there call and response? How is the music form performed (participatory, presentational, dance music, concert music)?
If Instruments: What is the name of the instrument? From where does the instrument originate? Describe the instrument, is it a chordophone, membranophone etc..., what materials are used to make the instrument, how is it made (is it hand carved, in a factory etc…), who makes the instruments (artisans, musicians, other labor basis)?
Explain why the entity has left the context of origins:
Why or how has the music form, song or instrument moved from its native context? If connected to the actions of people, what is the impetus that has coerced people to move from the place of origins? Is it a case in which the entity (music form, song or instrument) was appropriated by another cultural group? If so provide an explanation. Provide information around what time period the movement of this entity may have occurred (this could be an exact year or a range of time [e.g. between 1920 and 1935]).
Explain where the entity has been recontextualized:
Where is the entity now located? Are there various locations that have integrated the entity? How has the entity transformed? Is it used in the same manner, has it been integrated to serve a different function, is it still identifiable or has it questionably transformed into something else? Is it still the people of the native context that continue utilizing the entities in their respective cultural practices, but in a different location or is it other people using these entities? If it is other people using the entities do they use the music or instrument to perform the same expressions that were practiced in the native context or do they use the forms/instruments for a different purpose.
