Objective:
To evaluate and analyze a short film and to include researched support for your argument.

Method:
Students will choose a short film, no longer than 40 minutes in length. Students can visit websites with free access such as:
https://www(dot)shortoftheweek(dot)com/channels/ (Links to an external site.) https://www(dot)youtube(dot)com/results?search_query=short+films (Links to an external site.)

https://video(dot)nationalgeographic(dot)com/video/short-film-showcase (Links to an external site.)
If you have streaming service, you might also view sites such as amazon prime or Netflix.
When choosing a film, view a variety of genres until you find one that interests you. Maybe the film changes your view about something, tugs at an emotion, helps you relax, or could be just a waste of your time. Be sure to view the film more than once for anything you might have missed.
Based on your choice, introduce your topic and begin with a brief overview, specifically for an audience who has not seen the film. Lead to your thesis statement.
Evaluate the film based on the criteria that you decide (this should be in your thesis statement/evaluation). After watching the film, you may find that you did not like it or have issues with it, and that is fine as well. Here, you may find that you are analyzing aspects of the film or a major component such as the story, a specific character, or theme as you evaluate.
As you write, consider how you will support your ideas. Your support should include moments of the film for evidence as well as your own reasoning. You must also include 'hard' evidence and one form of evidence must be a journal article or book. You may also include a credible website article, blog, or film review to support your argument about the film.
You might also want to think about other points of view. Who might not support your evaluation? Maybe your goal is not to persuade an audience to view the film, but, instead, you are interested in convincing them that the dialogue works, the story’s pacing moves well, the characters are believable, or the music works as a clue of what will happen next.
Finish with your overall evaluation/judgment. What should readers come away with after reading your review?

Short Movie Pre-Draft Essay: Summary, Story, Thoughts and Research Questions 1. Summary
In short documentary “Climate Research Offers Coffee Farmers Hope for Their Crops” (4:06) (" Climate Research”), filmmaker Mary Cleven offers a personalized account of coffee growing in Guatemala under rapidly changing climate conditions and research to help farmers survive.
2. Story
“Climate Research Offers Coffee Farmers Hope for Their Crops” is a short documentary. This makes events factual and characters identifiable in real world. The movie, shot in an unidentified Guatemalan coffee farm, opens by an all too common scene in everyday coffee growing in Guatemala. Two workers, handsomely dressed (at least according to conventional representations of “wretched” and “downtrodden” coffee farmers in Central and South America), are shown pulling a coffee yield to prepare for further processing. This opening scene is followed by a factual and research-informed account by Diego Pons, Department of Geography and The Environment, University of Denver, about coffee’s importance for Guatemala as country’s third largest source of income and, perhaps, more importantly, as a source for social networking and biodiversity and sustainability. The camera shifts away from Pons and starts to “wander” amid coffee plantations and a natural beauty gradually giving way

yo climate change pressures and, ultimately, changes in fortunes of coffee growers dependent on
coffee for survival. The account of Pons is supported by Kevin Anchukaitis, Associate Professor
of Dendrochronology, University of Arizona. Supported by scenes showcasing water runways
and pathways, Anchukaitis explains how dry seasons wreck havoc to coffee so sensitive to
climate change and weather conditions. Meanwhile, a group of farm workers are shown picking
and sorting out coffee beans. The importance of agriculture for Guatemala is further emphasized
by an explanation provided by Pons about important agricultural produce such as sugar cane and
banana. Climate change emerges, accordingly, as a survival risk for Guatemalans. In response,
scientists, explains Anchukaitis, are doing more research to help fill in gaps created by shorter
rainfall seasons brought about by climate change. The research aims, ultimately, for better policy,
management and planning of crops in order to avoid negative effects and unpredictability of
climate change. The “coffee rust,” a fungus affecting coffee and exacerbated by climate change,
explains Pons, is examined in order to understand ideal precipitation conditions better and,
ultimately, reverse current negative impact of climate change. The undergoing research helps
answer very “specific and “local” questions asked by Guatemalan farmers concerned about
climate change for existential reasons for better crop management. The connection between
climate, prices and pest infestations become, concludes Pons, essential in order to improve
ability of farmers to succeed. The movie warps up with farm workers laughing and ca...
