Movie Review- Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
The Star Wars is an American science fiction series that was released in 1977. Movie critics and scholars have referred the series as an American epic, which was produced by George Walton Lucas Jr. Lucas shaped Star Wars with unique characters, plot, and dialogues that appeal to a wide range of audience. Furthermore, the series follows a structural tradition of story-telling as outlined in the writings of Joseph Campbell. The series has also discussed the work of Russian Formalist, Vladimir Propp. Through these discussions, Lucas shows how formalism theory makes the structure of folk tales. However, Star Wars entails several mythological tales, scholarly perspectives, theatrical traditions, and philosophies. Star Wars can be divided into the story of Anakin Skywalker and Lucas. The story of Lucas is entailed in Episodes IV, V, and VI, which illustrates the heroic journey of Joseph Campbell while Anakin's story comprises Episodes I, II, and III, which takes the form of Vladimir's structure. However, Lucas manages to integrate the style of formalism in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. 
Formalism is a style in film making that involves the director taking the Audience in an altered reality that they have created. Therefore, in formalism, the director relies heavily on special effects, lighting, and sounds that create exaggerations (Joseph 208). Furthermore, professional actors are used to breaking the illusion of reality to that of fiction. Formalism aims to present a wholly different and artificial world to the Audience (Joseph 210). In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Lucas uses formalism as a style to create this artificial world. In this episode, The Imperial Forces, under the leadership of Darth Vader, holds princess Leia hostage. They aim to quell the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Both Luke Skywalker and Millennium Falcon's captain, Han Solo, work collaboratively with the companionable droid duo R2-D2 and C-3PO to rescue Princess Leia (Walton 04:15-05:59).
