Essay Instructions:

Paper 1: Formal analysis (750 words). Select a TV show of your choice and watch one episode. Write an essay about how the formal choices— the show’s use of sound and image—inform the mood and tone of the episode.
This is not a report, but a persuasive essay. Assume your reader is not familiar with the show: Your first paragraph should introduce the subject or main themes of the show and include the case you are making for how form supports the mood and tone (i.e., a thesis statement). The body of the essay should use the vocabulary from class/reading to describe the show’s techniques, supporting your argument. Include at least three specific examples from your chosen episode to illustrate these points. End with a conclusion paragraph.

Name: Professor’s Name: Course: Due Date: Friends Season 1 Episode 21 The show Friends is known to be funny and its characters became household names when it aired from September 1994 to May 2004. Friends is a show that takes an interest in the lives of six characters who are friends. The six friends namely Ross, Joey, Chandler, Monica, Phoebe, and Rachel live in New York and the show focuses on their personal and professional lives. A lot of things are happening in the show but in this particular episode, there are two main things. First, there is Ross who is forced to say goodbye to his pet named Marcel and then there is Monica who in the end is forced to face reality and decide to be happy with her life the way it is. In this episode, the gestures from the characters, physical expressions, and soundtracks used all confirm that this episode makes a perfect connection between form and mood as well as the tone of the episode. Using this episode, this article will thus seek to showcase how image and sound are used to inform the mood and tone. Marcel is in a phase or a stage of transition and the show depicts the trouble that comes with the transition process. The characters of the show, especially Ross, Marcel’s guardian, appears concerned and distracted because of Marcel’s behavior. This depicts clearly how one person’s transition could impact those around him/her. For example, when children enter the teenage stage of life, they undergo changes and these changes often affect their parents and everyone around them. Their attitudes change and like Marcel, they will want to take all the attention. The sound before a scene involving Monica and Rachel where Monica is complaining about a woman who stole her identity also helps to set the tone of the scene. The sound depicts a somber mood because Monica believes the woman who stole her identity is living the life she should be living. She is conflicted because she believes she is the one who was supposed to live that life and the soundtrack before prepares one for what is coming. In the episode, Ross, Marcel’s guardian and Monica’s brother, is saddened by the changes Marcel is experiencing. Throughout the episode, he cuts a distracted and disturbed figure. He executes the role quite well. One scene that depicts the good use of image through him also involves Joey and Chandler. In this scene,...
