The Adventure of a Photographer
Italo Calvino, an Italian author born in Cuba, wrote a story called "The Adventure of a Photographer." It got first published in 1958, but it was reprinted in English in 1971 in his collection of short stories, Difficult Loves. It gives a beautiful portrayal of photography's fascination through the eyes of one person, Antonino. As it got published before the technological changes that have occurred in the last 20 years, the date the story got written has some significance to my ramblings here. Calvino's discoveries into the allure and obsession of photography - and, more broadly, the need to document the occurrences of our lives - have the unique touch of any great story (at least in my opinion).
Antonino Paraggi, a nonphotographer, felt an increasing sense of alienation after seeing so many of his friends and colleagues. Antonino, a "nonphotographer," does not understand why the fuss was like at first. He wonders why and how photographers make decisions. I agree with Calvino's philosophies on photography as they get explored in this story. He shows that the aim is often to create a picture of your ideal rather than capture reality when taking photos.
