Introduction
With the recent pandemic taking place, people are continuously taking measures to create an environment that still recreates yesterday’s idea. Such holidays and events usually celebrated have also been greatly influenced by it, which caused people to change how they take action, which is more limited and creates more considerable risk. Consequently, the people of Australia have also been proactive in creating an event that both holds safety and fun for the people commemorating Anzac Day. This paper will present how the pandemic influenced Anzac Day and how organizers created an opportunity to celebrate.
Background
In 1915, which was the 25th of April, the infamous Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) legend took place that caused significant changes to both the country and its people. It was a memorable day that brought forth a developing nation in which war served as the critical element in building the nation (Lake 2010). Since then, ANZAC was continuously recognized as the myth and history of the past and, in some cases, defined as the civil religion of Australia. The celebration was also done in various ways, such as Dawn Service at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance, commemorative ‘festivals,’ and more (Clark, 2017:19). This is supported by Sumartojo (2016:2) as who presented that after the life-changing events in Gallipoli, there has been a continuous increase in sponsoring the events done during Anzac Day. He also added that this event had received approval from the government and a continuous record-breaking attendance and ceremony. This implies how important these events are for the people of Australia since it was the time where their nation was created, and lives were sacrificed to achieve such a goal.
Analysis: Responding to the Covid-19 Pandemic
Despite the ongoing threat of the pandemic, RSL Victoria (2020) released an article about their eagerness to fulfill their celebration of Anzac Day at year present. The article stated an optimistic view regarding the continuation of the celebration as it has been a long year tradition for the people. Jamie Twidale, the RSL Victora CEO, stated that they have full intentions of making this event happen and will continue to do so until further notice from the Victorian State Government. It was also disclosed how they would provide contingency plans in case they are given a limited discretion. Oppositely, most of the states in Australia canceled their ce...
