Can individual, state, and environment all be referent objects (what to protect) in ‘environmental security’?
The definition and meaning of security are quite broad and deep. Thus, it can be argued ideally that individuals, state, and the environment are all referent objects, but not simultaneously in the real world. However, it depends on who perceives or being affected by these three items. An item that is considered as a referent object by an individual may not maintain such status according to other persons or organizations. It must be noted that environmental security is highly interconnected to national security, that it becomes difficult to delineate the two.
The term insecurity harbors multiple meanings, meanings, or points of interpretations. The risk of something happening to a thing that is valued is considered as insecurity (Barnett, 2010, pp.230). For instance, someone may consider the possibility of losing a job as insecurity. Thus, security applies to various items that are valued, including employment, jobs, health, and encompassed a range of risks like lack of food or unemployment. The endeared or valued items are often referred to as referent objects (Barnett, 2010, pp.230).
