Management Careers & Professional Development:Potential Role & Company

Essay Instructions:

Task 1: Complete the Pre-Module Self-Assessment activity to help you reflect on your own career goals for the upcoming academic year. There are three questions to answer; answers to the first two questions should be between 200-400 words.
Task 1: Pre-Module Self-Assessment Activity
1. Identify one potential role and company you aspire to work in after your degree. Consider the reasons why you chose this job role and company, and why you feel they would match your skills and values.
If you were not able to attend the pre-entry session SETTING YOUR CAREER DIRECTION AND THE PLAN TO ACHIEVE IT, you may find it helpful to review the slides first.
2. Reflect on any skill/knowledge gaps required for the above role and think about which activities (extra-curricular/volunteering/networking/events/research) you plan on undertaking this academic year (2021-22) to fill this gap. You may find it helpful to find and review some real job descriptions for your selected role to help identify those skill / knowledge gaps.
In your answer, please specify TWO S.M.A.R.T. goals for the next year to fill these gaps.
These should not be academic goals. Each S.M.A.R.T. goal must cover the following:
- Be very clear in what you want to achieve. Consider breaking the goal down into smaller steps.
- How will you measure/track the goal?
- Ensure your goals are not too high. Don’t set yourself up to fail! Consider: which items do you need to achieve this goal? How will you find the time?
- Are there any other resources (i.e. people you can talk to for support) to help you achieve your goal? How can you access these resources? What problems might you have?
- Set a reasonable time limit to achieve your goal. E.g. 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, 9 months. Consider different (smaller) time limits for smaller steps.
3. Please list which eight Careers Electives from the Careers & Professional Development Programme you will attend to support you on your career journey. Note that it is possible on occasion that some of the Electives advertised may need to be changed or cancelled at short notice, due to external speaker availability. If this is the case, you may need to be flexible about which eight you ultimately attend. It is fine to attend more than eight sessions; eight is the minimum required.

Potential Role and Company
After finishing school, I would like to work as a manager in a PC manufacturing company like Lenovo, HP, or Dell. The goal is achievable by completing my studies and getting experience in the human resource field. Gaining experience, training, and education are prioritized to work as an effective HR manager. I have been using computers since I was young, and I have always dreamt of working in a company that manufactures something I love using. The position of an HR manager requires one to be analytically driven and have the capability to comprehend essential human resource metrics such as recruitment of new employees, retention, and grading the performance of each employee (Hurrell, 2016). Therefore, I would like to work as an HR manager at HP since I believe I possess the necessary skills to help me work effectively in the position, including communication, decision-making, and organizational skills.
When one is the head of the human resource department, they should have good communication skills and be able to express themselves clearly, in both written and oral form. This position requires one always to be talking with different people as it involves recruiting and conducting interviews. My communication skills are well polished, and I believe that would be a viable position for me. Additionally, I possess great organizational skills, which would be effective if I sued them while working in such a position. I also have excellent decision-making skills, and I believe they will be helpful in the HR department. Decision-making skills are essential, especially during the recruitment process, as the HR manager gets to choose is going to be employed from a large list of applicants. The skills also come in handy when a company decides to downsize.
