The accounting field is currently one of the most attractive areas one can choose to specialize in. However, one has to make sure that they position themselves for more opportunities in the field. Acquiring a degree in accounting is indeed attractive. However, there is a need to add to this degree by acquiring certifications and other professional licenses. These increase the chances of one standing out during an interview and getting whichever position one is looking for. One of the most common but also most crucial certifications in accounting is known as CPA or the Certified Public Accountant. This certification is quite instrumental in the life of an accountant as it helps to open doors and opportunities for many. According to Indeed.com (2021), a survey on the benefit of CPA revealed that 77% of individuals who have this certification believe that it helped their career progression. Furthermore, 86% of the participants also indicated that CPA made it easier to get a job. The above thus confirms that CPA is a crucial certification that can help many accounting students acquire scale the heights of the accounting field.
While conducting my accounting research, I also discovered that certain jobs within the field happen to attract the greatest number of people. One of the career opportunities that have the most appeal based on my research is auditing. Auditing mainly involves assessing the financial records of companies and ensuring accuracy and reliability are upheld (Ottawa University, 2021). An auditor can work in various spaces, including the public space or domain, which means working as a government auditor, or in the private space, auditing for companies. An auditor is a crucial piece for every company and helps ensure compliance. This means that it is the work of an auditor to make sure that the company’s financial books are without any errors and that employees are complying with stipulated laws. Auditors can also help to prevent the theft of company property. By doing their checks and balances, auditors can flag instances of theft and protect the company against fraud or losses. The field is also projected to keep growing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The positions for accountants and auditors are expected to grow 7% from 2020 to 2030 (BLS, 2019). Openings that total more than 135,000 are expected for these two careers every year. Therefore, auditing is indeed an appealing career opportunity.
