Change is often conceptualized in a linear way, as something that ruptures with the emergence of new things. How do we make sense of this when considering labor relations/conditions in the U.S. historically, and in the present?
Using a couple of specific examples to illustrate your argument, briefly compare and contrast a) Barbara Ehrenreich's study of working conditions under neoliberal capitalism, with b) the plight of workers in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. The working conditions and economic situation in the United States related and varied in different eras. Ehrenreich and Sinclair’s articles show the similarities and variations in the working conditions. The authors describe periods of rapid economic growth by thriving multiple industries like the standard oil, fighting for the reforms in working conditions, and evolution through challenges to better working conditions.
The jungle
The people described in the jungle experienced appalling working conditions. According to Sinclair (1999, 42), they handled diseased, rotten, and contaminated meat. The issue resulted in the invention of new federal food safety rules considering the public’s shock and alarm. Also, the meat industry’s horrible working conditions intrigued a significant reform movement in the country even before the emergence of the 20th century (Sinclair, 1999,58). They engaged in the principal activity of attacking the meat packaging company and other factories such as standard oil and US steel for eliminating competition, setting high prices on commodities, and treating workers as wage slaves.
