Study Guide for the Mid-Term Exam Course Title: SOSC 1341: Introduction to the Social Economy Instructor: Dr. Caroline S. Hossein Location, Date and Time: All students take mid-term exam in the same lecture hall as usual on Monday, 18th November, 2:30pm-4pm (I will not add time on for late arrivals; so be on time for the exam). [If you have a CDS letter, then you are to do your exam at an alternative time [email your CDS advisor to find out the date ASAP]. Students who miss the exam will have to show official documentation to the professor and will take the exam at a time that she fixes–there is only one make-up exam for serious cases only]. Exam Format: The mid-term exam is worth 30% of your final grade. It will be held in class sharply at 2:30pm and end at 4pm. The mid-term exam will have two sections. The first section will be comprised of 5 terms worth 10 points each, for a total of 50 points. You will have a choice of 10 terms. The second section of the exam is one essay question worth 50 points. The questions will test your familiarity with the lecture material, guest speakers, and reading assignments as well as your ability to apply what you have learned in tutorial. (approx. 40 minutes total or 8 mins. per concept) Potential Terms and Short Answer Topics: You will be expected to write your answers in the exam booklets provided. Please double-space your answers. Point form answers are only acceptable as long as they are based on fully developed ideas (as opposed to one-word answers). Your response will be analytical and you need to draw on the course literature, lecture notes, films and guest talks. You will have a choice of 10 of terms to choose from. You will not know which terms will appear on the exam so know them all. The Social economy can be described as a level or sector of economy based on community support, welfare activities, social ethics and poverty eradication rather than profit maximization or creation of wealth. Essentially, it involves activities aimed at fulfilling the needs of the community, raising the living standards, providing social services and an opportunity for people to become productive and earn a living. Despite some of the social organizations growing to be very successful and yielding profits, the initial objective is welfare based rather than profit making. The social economy, mostly made up of voluntary enterprises and non-governmental organizations, works hand with the support of the government and private stakeholders to perform ethical duties in the societies.
Historically, it was unpopular in many areas to hear of social economy. Essentially every business or enterprise was capitalistic in nature and aimed at maximizing its profits, and the shareholders wealth. For instance in Canada, the rise of social economy was seen as a threat by the economic giants and it was its increasing importance in policy formulation that led the government endorsed the economy and started to fund it too (Amin, 2013). Socialists remain to be the biggest supporters of social economy and over the years there has been improved perception on the role of the sector in the economy. In Canada, the social economy traces its history to the traditional community hunting and gathering where proceeds were divided among the members of the society.
Ever since it was initiated, social economy has grown to be a trivial part of the economy of Canada, with it being recognized as a third sector of the economy.
