Article 1
America Got Less White, Older, and More Urban Last Year
3 Key Takeaways
* America’s over and under age demarcation line spiked from 37.2 years in 2000 to 38.0 years in 2017. Millennials as well as baby boomers are responsible for the increase in the aging population because as baby boomers gradually increase, they are outnumbering millennials as the birth rate has progressively gone down over the past decade. A majority of the countries in the United States continue to grow older which explains why the demarcation line has increased.
* America is becoming more diverse by ethnicity and race. The population of non-Hispanic whites is decreasing while other ethnic groups and races increased in number between 1 July, 2016 and 1 July, 2017. In terms of size, the population of the non-Hispanic whites is projected to continue aging and declining.
* The Asian population is growing at an increased rate with a 22.2 million increase. This increase is attributed to net migration. The Hispanic population made up 18.1 percent of America’s total population in 2017. By 2035, the overall population of Americans aged 65 and older is predicted to surpass that of millennials for the first time.
Question
One question the article prompted but did not answer is “Why is a significant number of inhabitants in America living in metropolitan areas?” The article only stated that a significant fraction of the nation’s population lives in metropolitan areas, but, did not offer any reason why.
Article 2
Immigrants Form 25%of New U.S. Businesses, Driving Entrepreneurship in ‘Gateway’ States
3 Key Takeaways
* Migrants have generated wealth as they have made their mark on American business, technology, science, and culture. As such, migrant entrepreneurs generate approximately one quarter of newly established businesses in America, with the numbers varying extensively by location.
* Immigrants account for more that forty percent of new businesses in New Jersey, New York, and California and fewer than five percent in North Dakota and Idaho. Immigrant-owned firms are also more likely to survive, and grow slightly faster compared to native-owned businesses. Immigrant-owned businesses are mostly owned by females. These females tend to be younger and are more prone to combine owners of various ages.
* Immigrant-created businesses provide innovation and employment. Immigrant-owned businesses tend to create lower-paying jobs. Immigrant-owned businesses also seem to generate fewer jobs and offer fewer benefits (they do not offer health insurance, 401 (k) plan, and paid time off. Immigrant-owned businesses are smaller compared to native-owned businesses in terms of employee count. Immigrant owned businesses also have a slightly different industry composition.
Question
One question the article prompted but did not answer is why do immigrant-owned businesses generate fewer jobs and offer fewer benefits but still show substantially higher rates of engagements in international activity such as exporting and are still considered vital to the United States economy of immigrant entrepreneurship?
