Technology is here with us, and it has become an integral part of our daily lives. In the current era, getting news, paying bills, communicating with family members and loved ones has become easy due to the advancements in technology. Additionally, we are getting different types of entertainment from watching movies to playing video games. Big companies are also utilising these advancements in technology to get the necessary skills to work in their institutions. The world has become connected, and everybody is connected to everyone all the time. In short, technology has changed everything in the world, and it is here to stay. However, as much as we have become more dependent on technology, it is not new news to everyone that young children have become regular users as well. Computer devices for young children are being designed and children as young as five years have access to smartphones. Children have become exposed to the media than before. According to the findings of Kaiser Family Foundation survey of 2010, children between the ages of 8-18 spend an average of seven hours and thirty-eight minutes a day on the media and technology devices (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2010). As young children get immersed in technology, many stakeholders such as parents, teachers and policymakers have raised many concerns about the impact technology is having on our children.
Social media and networking are one of the major concerns that are being debated nowadays. Young children as ten years have streamed the online social media platforms. As the world is being more connected through the internet and cell phones, the privacy of children is a major concern for all stakeholders (Clinton, & Steyer, 2012). Despite the imposed rules by the social site owners of restricting certain age from signing up with them, it is evident that many children as young as 12 years and below are joining these sites. The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) protects children below the age of 13 from accessing the contents of the online media. However, it is hard to know the age of the children joining the sites since they can lie about their ages. There are no laid structures of proving whether the age of the children joining the sites is correct.
Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are arguably the biggest web phenomena on the modern era. They allow active users to stay connected with their families and the world as a whole. These sites give them the opportunity of sharing their information, photos, locations, opinions and videos to whoever they want (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2010). Although they try their best to maintain the thirteen-year-old minimum age, it is has been proved to be difficult since children can claim to be thirteen years old when for sure they are several years below.
These media sites have become the largest media advertising agents making it difficult for individuals to keep their privacy to themselves. With the recent boom of applications such as game systems and horoscopes have become the major features of these sites.
