Essay Instructions:

For Thursday, March 26th, you have an assignment that will count for 1.5 points of your course grade.
Your job is to read the following:
Ruth Gomber-Munoz, Labor and Legality, Chapter 4: Friends Networks and Households, Oxford University Press, 2011.Preview the document
Then write a 150-200 word summary and answer the following discussion questions:
Questions:
From Labor and Legality, Chapter 4:
Among undocumented workers, social networks are relied on heavily for the purpose of finding jobs. How does this work? And to what degree do the workers, and in this particular case the busboys, control jobs and the flow of information about jobs? Why do they take on this responsibility? What’s in it for them?
Based on what you read, were you surprised by the level of control that the employers allowed the workers to have in terms of recruiting workers for open positions? Why would an employer allow the workers such latitude in controlling the process?
We generally assume that immigrant/undocumented workers take the crappy jobs that the rest of us will not take. But based on the readings, this is clearly not the case. So how do immigrant workers evaluate the quality of their jobs? What are they looking for in an employer? What collective information do they use to determine which jobs they should and should not take?
Prior to this week’s readings, what were your assumptions about how immigrants managed their money and lived their lives when they were not at work? Based on the readings, have you changed your views? (Please explain) Also, do you think the fact that it is harder to go back home now, has changed the way undocumented immigrants are living and thinking about the future? (Please explain)
You can cut and past your summary and questions on to a Word Doc or whatever word processing app you use. If you don't use Word, please be sure to save your assignment as a PDF before you upload it. Summary and Discussion Question
1. Among undocumented workers, social networks are relied on heavily for the purpose of finding jobs. How does this work? And to what degree do the workers, and in this particular case the busboys, control jobs and the flow of information about jobs? Why do they take on this responsibility? What’s in it for them?
Social networks are an effective medium for undocumented workers to find jobs. Most of the immigrants consider them a reliable option to find work rather than family or relatives, some of whom are legal immigrants and are frightened about the legal repercussions. The social networks are curial since it ensures that embers can share transportation and living expenses. Such an arrangement allows the group to maintain autonomy while monopolizing different jobs. Since such networks are mainly comprised of friends or family members, they feel more invested and are more willing to follow specific group norms. The social networks are used to share information about busboys and the best options that lead to success. The busboys are required by managers to recruit employees (Gomberg-Muсoz, 2011). They often notify their friends and cousins about employment opportunities. Such a responsibility ensures that they can create a group with individuals who agree with them and are willing to conform to the requirements of the group. This is a reason why the busboys often select individuals whom they trust and have known for some time, which makes it easier to work with them.
2. Based on what you read, were you surprised by the level of control that the employers allowed the workers to have in terms of recruiting workers for open positions? Why would an employer allow the workers such latitude in controlling the process?
Yes, I was very surprised by the level of control that the employees had when recruiting workers. This allowed them to choose whomever they wanted even if they were not the right fit for the organization. The employer should have the ultimate responsibility since they have a role to play in hiring, firing, and even paying the employee. If they let an employee take over the hiring process, then it means they are not liable for anything that occurs on the employees. Such an approach means that the workplace will be comprised of personnel who are more willing to listen to th...
