Blue is the Warmest Color
The film is about two women from different worlds who fell in love. Adele, a straight high school student is exploring her identity and sexual desires and Emma is an Art Student with blue hair who is a lesbian. This paper will talk about the film’s visual imagery, language, the time given, context, power, tone, characters, and audience.
The visual imagery used in the film is that there color blue is very evident in the movie, which symbolizeAdele’s attraction for Emma. Their first encounter happens when Adele is walking on the street and she sees Emma who has blue hair, blue eyes, wearing a blue jacket, and blue jeans. During this moment, Adele is on her way to meet a boy, but even while she is with the boy, the image of Emma lingers in her mind. After that, Adele joins her friend to go bar hopping and she enters a lesbian bar to see if she can find Emma. She succeeds with her search and converses with her. They engage in a short conversation that is short enough for them to exchange information on what they both do and say good bye. Adele sees Emma outside their school after classes are finished and they decide to talk a walk.
The movie also uses a lot of symbols that pertain to sex like before they make love for the first time, they visit a museum with a lot of naked sculptures and statues that exemplify the body curves of women. Another symbol used in the play is the conversation about oysters; that it is Emma’s favorite food because it also reminds her of something related to sex. Emma invites Adele to have dinner at her house and they have oysters as part of their appetizer. The color blue gives audiences and image of Adele’s attraction and desire for Emma, which also makes hair stand out from the crowd. The conversation about oysters and the two of them eating oysters for dinner represents sexual desire.
The film is French, which means that regardless if you are captivated by the film or not, it is not solely because of the nudity in the movie, but rather the presence of art. Viewers who like the French language will find Blue is the Warmest Color compelling, transporting, since it slowly reveals its story of intellectual, artistic striving, sexual communion and first love (Eisenbach, 2014). Since Emma is part of the elite social class, her conversations are about culture, art, and exquisite food. This defines the difference between the two in terms of socio-economic class because Adele is a teacher and has to work in order to survive. During Emma’s celebration, Adele cooks all the food and also becomes the one to serve all the guests while Emma is busy talking to her friends. In the party, there is only person that Adele can relate to and dances with him as she sees Emma chatting with another girl whom she finds intriguing. This demonstrates that there are a lot of instances when they do not speak the same language because they are from two different worlds. Adele is happy cooking and cleaning for Emma, while Emma wants Adele to go out and pursue her passion just like what she is do...
