Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 movie with a 1947 setting. The film revolves around the drastic transformation and eventual journey of one Andy Dufresne from a successful banker to an inmate at Shawshank prison. While working as a banker, it never occurred to Dufresne that he would ever serve time much lessbe convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. However, throughout the entire process, Dufresne maintained that he was innocent but unfortunately, he was found guilty. At the time, the state of Maine never had the death penalty, and thus Dufresne was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences. His misfortunes seemed to know no end because he was sent to Shawshank Prison, and with its notoriously harsh treatment of prisoners, Dufresne was in for a “treat.”
While in prison, Dufresne still retained hope and with time earned the respect of the inmates. He even became friends with Ellis Boyd Redding who was also serving a life sentence in Shawshank. However, regardless of the truth or lies regarding their cases, one can never fail to notice the corruption and injustice within the prison. The prison wardens, for example, Samuel Norton and the guards, for instance, Byron Hadley had no respect to statutes such as the right to life. This article examines Samuel Norton’s actions in line with the criminological theories.
