Symbolic interactionism involves studying of symbolic values while conflict theory studies the social inequity. On the other hand, functionalism studies functions. According to Craib (2015), numerous sociologists aided to come up with the theories, where Emile Durkheim and Robert Merton expounded on functionalism.
The Difference between the Theories
The functionalism theory takes the society as an amalgamation of various organizations and functions that help to connect the harmony and strength of the society (Cornwell, et al., 2016). In addition, the theory believes that the functions depend on one another, such that if one changes, the rest of the functions follow suit. For instance, to bring back equilibrium, the price of an item might go down, hence, increase its production. Several theorists are popular for coming up with the functionalism theory (Cornwell, et al., 2016).
Karl Marx is the only individual who is popular for coming up with the conflict theory (Lundy & Darkwah, 2018). This theory stresses on inequality.
