Lower extremity edema is common in elderly people. Congestive heart failure can cause lower extremity edema because of the gravitational effect on the body. The edema is the excess fluids in the body that result in swelling of the body tissues. The Loop of Henle keeps removing the excess fluids out of the body through its permeable walls that allow fluids to pass under pressure. The pressure that enables the Loop of Henle to perform its work comes from the heart’s pumping pressure of blood. When the heart fails to function properly, the fluids cannot be eliminated out of the body by the Loop of Henle, so they accumulate in the body tissues. Furosemide induces the secretion of the more antidiuretic hormone that increase the permeability of the walls of the Loop of Henle. The pores of the Loop of Henle allow the passing of more body fluids to the kidney (Lippincott, 2008).
