A vulnerable population can be understood as the sub-segments of the general population with particular peculiarities that render them vulnerable to social problems and thus requires assiduous care (Maschi & Leibowitz, 2017). Children, people living with disabilities, the homeless, people living with chronic diseases, the veterans, the LBBTQ, and the elderly are some of the individuals and groups that make up the vulnerable populations. The social challenges that the vulnerable population is prone to include lack of employment, inadequate access to social services such as education and healthcare, poverty, and even lack of basic necessities such as food and shelter.
Despite the numerous mitigation efforts by the governments, well-wishers, and humanitarian organizations, the susceptibility of the vulnerable groups to social and health injustices continues to prevail. Some of the driving forces for the vulnerability of these groups to social problems include race, age, gender, sex, and level of income, among others. The micro and micro levels are sociological terms used to describe the different perspectives of studying and analyzing social problems, with the former referring to the individual perspective while the latter representing a wider view of the social process such as the institutional, organizational, or societal level (Maschi & Leibowitz, 2017).
