Black Lives Matter is one of the recent activist movements formed in 2013 among African American community to protest against systematic racism in the US. The BLM originated as an online campaign using the hashtag Black Live Matter, when George Zimmerman a white resident was acquitted for the murder of Trayon Martin a black teenager. Three African American community activists, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza, who met at a forum known as Black organizing for leadership and dignity, started questioning how black were devalued .
In protest, Garza posted a letter on Facebook titled, a love note to black people and received a reply which stated that our lives matter, and black lives matter, this became an online campaign. With several atrocities against blacks in America, black lives matter movement became a national social movement, organizing street demonstrations, especially after several deaths of African Americans in several states. More and more people participated in non-violent demonstrations. Black lives matter emerged as one of the most organized social movements in America.
BLM has successfully held several protests against police killings and succeeded in addressing broader issues related to racial profiling and inequality in the US.
