The increase in immigration has necessitated an increase in immigration laws within the United States. These laws serve to address; illegal immigrants, authorized immigrants, migrants, seasonal workers and refugees. An example of these laws is the Georgia immigration law which was enacted in 2011. This law empowers local police to seek out illegal immigrants and jail them. Accordingly, law enforcement officers are free to check the immigration status of suspects anytime they deem fit including during traffic stops. Conversely, victims of crime and witnesses may not be required to produce their identification card even when they are suspected to be potential illegal immigrants.
In the event that the suspects are arrested, their fingerprints are run through a database to determine their immigration status. If proved to be illegal immigrants, they are jailed with immediate effect. Once the illegal immigrant suspects are jailed, the federal officers commence the deportation process. As such, it has been regarded as one of the laws with the toughest measures (Hing, 2014). Furthermore, Georgia’s immigration law requires individuals to produce identification requirements when seeking public benefits. This implies that illegal immigrants are restricted from receiving public benefits within the state. However, they are allowed to access services which are regarded as necessary to ensure safety and protect life, such as emergency health care. Consequently, this law forces immigrants to provide their proof of identity and residency in both the state and in the U.S.
