A major issue in criminal justice that arouses passion is racial profiling. One racial minority group that is racially profiled regularly by the law enforcement is the African Americans. According to DeLisi & Regoli (2005), studies have shown that African Americans are more likely to engage in conventional crimes than the whites. The disproportionate involvement of African Americans with the justice system has been blamed on racial discrimination by some researchers (DeLisi & Regoli., 2005). Another group that is often racially profiled is the Muslim community. In the wake of bomb attacks in major cities around the world, law enforcement often uses racial profiling when pursuing suspects.
Profiling of these two groups impacts the criminal justice system significantly. As informed by Chan (2011), members of these groups can lose confidence in the system because of the continuous feeling of being alienated and harassed. The author notes that the victims of racial profiling are concerned most about the sense of injustice. With low confidence in the system, disrespect and dissatisfaction can occur. Therefore, racial profiling of the two groups above can affect how the justice system is perceived by them.
Whether it is justifiable or not to racially profile certain groups is debatable. Certain characteristics such as skin color may help the law enforcement in assessing risks in some situation.
