A society can be defined as a group of individuals who live in a definable community, most often as society tends to share the same beliefs and cultural ideas. Gerhard Lenski categorizes societies depending on their level of technological sophistication. According to Lenski, the levels of technology tends to change as society develops. For example, the societies which relied on elementary and basic technology depended on alteration of the environment while on the other side, industrialized societies are generally cautious about the impact they have on the surrounding.
It is important to understand that by grouping societies depending on their level of industrialization. As pertains to this, the three major categories of societies include pre-industrial societies; these societies existed before the industrial revolution, and they were generally small and depended on the local resources (Little, 2014). It is also essential to note that economic production was determined by the amount of human labor which would be offered. Also, only a few occupations were specialized. Societies during this period mainly depended on hunting and gathering; this demonstrates that individuals were reliant on the surrounding for their survival. Additionally, these societies were mainly nomadic since they moved from one place to another in search of sustenance. Although these societies existed hundreds of years ago, there are a few that are still in existence such as the Bambuti who are found in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the aborigines who are the indigenous tribes in Australia.
