What is social disorganization?
This is a theoretical perspective that seeks to explain the different levels of crime ecologically, while basing it cultural and structural factors. Ideally these are factors that tend to play a major role in the shaping of the communities’ nature of social order. In the older theories much of the social order, criminal behaviors and stability were assessed on the basis of the urban growth covariates. In reference to the theory, as social self regulation mechanisms fail, the social integration within the neighborhoods disintegrate leading to rise in crime among the people living there. The rise of the delinquent subcultures and the fall of the structural system are to blame for disintegration of the social mechanisms of interactions. Gang cultures are some of the subcultures that develop within the society, through shared values and beliefs and are vividly implicated in the social disorganization theory. In every society there are structures that define the aspects of interactions between the different members of the society. They form the basis of behavior and thus when they breakdown, people no longer have stable relation mechanisms.
At the same time the social interactions are subject to what the persons involved wish to do rather than what is socially acceptable. If the structures related to security of the people living in a given community breakdown, there will be a rise in crime related to robbery, break-ins, assault and murder among others. One of the approaches that has been in the research circles relates to the fact that where there are cultural standards that converge at one place and cause conflict, especially in the poorer neighborhoods linked closely to the aspect of development of criminal behavior, crime is going to be very high. At the same time there is an approach that relates to the poor social controls that are linked closely to socioeconomic disadvantages, high population heterogeneity and a rise in residential turnover (Oxfordbibliographies.com, 2014).
How does social disorganization relate to organized crime and its evolution?
Organized crimes closely relates to network of criminal activities that are run by criminal organized into formalized structures. The primary objective of the organized crime groups is to make sure that they obtain money through illegal activities within the society. Social disorganization can be used in the explanation of these groups and how they come to evolve. Ideally, social relates to the aspect of the social institutions failing and leading t the failure of the social controls in the society. The social institutions in this case are the likes of schools, police, government offices and religious institutions among others.
