REALIST AND LIBERAL THINKING Name: Grade Course: Tutor`s Name: (October 3, 2012) Realist and Liberal Thinking Liberal and realist theories have been holding privilege places on the menu of theoretical international relations. Most intellectual battles concerning international relations have been based on these two theories, as scholars have been arguing across realism and liberalism divide. As an effect, the aim of this essay is to critically discuss the differences between liberal and realist thinking in international relations. According to the realists states tend to pursue actions that are of their national interest while disobeying moral considerations. Realist takes international arena as being an anarchy that is governed by an authority that does not override states` sovereignty. As an effect, international institutions like UN have no substantial credibility in the presence of realism, as international influence is predominantly held by major powers like the United State. Realists states that, survival is the main interest of any state, so, states should compete for any available resource. Every state has to observe the behaviours of its neighbours closely with the aim of resolving problems effectively without any regard to moral concerns. This is based on the fact that players of international relations end up being handicapped by the creep of morality whenever they attempt to adopt the new conditions (Bacevich, 2005) and (Scott 2010). Liberalism on the other hand views cooperation among states as a factor that can ensure sustainable peace and development. Liberalism does not advocate acquisition, preservation and application of powers in the international relation essence.
