SHARP Analysis
Men and women serve in the military, and just like in the civilian sphere, women in the military are subject to sexual harassment. Although the military has a group called Sexual Harassment Assault Response Prevention (SHARP), acts of sexual harassment are still prevalent because some members of the groups there engage in it for their own members despite being forbidden from doing so with others who are not part of their group. The majority of sexual harassment cases involving women in the military are committed by guys who identify as masculine. When these men are together, it is only natural for them to behave boldly and illegally because it is the nature of man. Former service members who experienced sexual assault in the military and advocates who support them assert that one of the factors contributing to the persistence of sexual abuse in the military is the leadership structure. In the military, sexual assaults are dealt with according to the line of command. That implies that the victim's commanding officer can immediately halt an investigation, lighten a sentence, or even overturn a conviction. Because doing so could harm their reputation, the system of military leadership provides commanders with a solid incentive to refrain from looking into allegations of sexual assault (Childress, 2013). Due to statistical studies, it has been established that the military's existing training is ineffective at lowering sexual harassment. Increased penalties for sexual harassment may result in a decline in the practice.
