Introduction
Built in 1967, the Qualcomm stadium (formerly known as San Diego- Jack Murphy stadium or San Diego stadium) has been one of the oldest living testaments of San Diego’s might in the field of athleticism and performance. This astonishingly enormous block of solid concrete, sitting in the middle of Mission valley, has prided itself with hosting numerous national sports events, concerts and performances, and, being the home for the San Diego Chargers. National sporting events held in this place include Super Bowls 1988, 1998, and 2003, with the second one – Super Bowl 1998 – held with the World Series during the same year CITATION San16 \l 1033 (SanDiego.gov, 2016). Today, many other stadiums are already in the process of development and are just a short time away from completion. Stadiums much bigger and more advanced that this one. Even its resident team – the San Diego chargers – are now moving downtown while sharing a stadium with the Los Angeles rams CITATION San163 \l 1033 (SanDiego.gov, 2016). In contrasts with this, educational systems such as the San Diego State University – are now in need of bigger facilities for housing, academic space, and research. For these reasons, we believe that this is an excellent time for the place to be transformed and utilized as a center and major hub of academic excellence, sustainable development, and innovative research in Mission valley. And what better way to do that than to raze the place, and, together with vast surrounding areas (which are mainly parking lots) be converted into a West campus of the San Diego State University (SDSU).
This proposed project would include 630,000 square feet of commercial of academic and campus space, 200,000 square feet of commercial space, 400 faculty housing, 3,900 student apartments, a 200 room hotel, and a 40,000 seat stadium. Aside from these, the proposed project would also create the San Diego river park with a 40 acre open space and a garage and at-grade parking with 14, 760 spaces CITATION The16 \l 1033 (The San Deigo Union Tribune, 2016). All of these changes are conceived to cater the rising demand for higher education and scientific research which cannot be supported solely by SDSU’s current location and infrastructures in Montezuma CITATION The161 \l 1033 (The San Diego Union Tribune, 2016). Furthermore, these changes would also give more emphasis to low-to-midrise housing densities and a ‘transit-oriented development’. As apparent from the proposed plan, athleticism and performance was still carefully considered through the inception of an “appropriately-sizedâ€Β stadium built together with a larger academic area. Aside from these considerati...
