Romantic relationships are the highlight of some people's life journey. Since most individuals have experienced some romance at least once in their life, it has become an exciting topic, and many fields of science studied the factors affecting romance or attractiveness per se. We have discussed topics related to romance in our class, particularly during the initiation and experimentation processes. This paper shall relate these topics to my personal experiences.
Berschied's Matching Hypothesis states that an individual is more likely to be attracted to another person of the same level of attractiveness (Beatty, 2021). Now, we shall analyze this from my point-of-view. During my childhood years, although it cannot be considered as a romantic experience with another person yet, I was attracted mainly with the opposite sex and to beautiful people of whatever gender. I value facial symmetry and the overall attractiveness of a person. My very first crush was a famous person in middle school. This was a tall individual with fair and smooth skin.
Additionally, this person has symmetrical facial qualities and tantalizing eyes. During that time, I also had fair and smooth skin, similar to my crush. Furthermore, setting aside individual differences and discrimination, I prefer beautiful people I think can reach or surpass my beauty and attractiveness standards. As I grew up, this perception did not change at all. I had several romantic partners who are on par with my level of attractiveness or popularity in school.
Another example is my middle school best friend, who was the most popular girl in school. She was a cheerleader, and at the same time, she was athletic and intelligent. All of these qualities made her much more attractive. She was everyone's crush, and I had to admit that even I had an interest in her, although not romantically speaking. She had all sorts of admirers, whether attractive or not. However, most of those who drew near her is the most popular jocks in school. Her other admirers, who were less attractive, were not able to confess to her. Soon, she became the girlfriend of the most valuable player in our middle school basketball team.
Some of the aspects of attractiveness that I take into consideration are facial and body symmetries. Based on our discussion, some of the dimensions of what was considered as a symmetrical face are as follows: Face is more extended than more comprehensive for 1.5 times; Length of the hairline is up to mid-eye level; Symmetrical length mid-eye level to the bottom of nose and nose to chin; Equal lengths of nose and ears; and others. Some of the well-known individuals who have achieved these criteria include Brad Pitt and Audrey Hepburn (Beatty, 2021).
Based on these criteria, I believe that there are some exceptions to the Matching Hypothesis. I know that I do not have these qualities, nor I have the same level of attractiveness as the mentioned renowned actors. I am still attractive to them, no matter which era I live in.
