The Importance of Social Psychology in Media

Essay Instructions:

In addition to entertaining us, television and film offer detailed portrayals of human social behavior. Your task in this assignment is to analyze, from a social-psychological perspective, the behaviors and events depicted in a film or television show (from the last ten years only) of your choosing. You are not being asked to critique the film in terms of its entertainment value; rather, you should think carefully about the human actions and events are portrayed. With these events in mind, apply the concepts we have covered to explain the characters’ behavior. After reviewing your notes and readings, identify three social-psychological principles that appear to be at work (e.g., fundamental attribution error, heuristics, overconfidence barrier, priming, primacy effect, belief perseverance, self-serving attribution, social tuning, cognitive dissonance, schemas, self-fulfilling prophecies, groupthink, deindividuation, conformity, etc.). For each principle that you identify: (a) bold the concept you use the first time you use it in the paragraph (b) briefly describe the relevant scene so that someone who hasn’t seen it can follow (note: be as concise as possible in your scene description, devoting most of your space to the academic analysis rather than the description portion) (c) describe the social-psychological principle you believe is relevant (d) elaborate on how the selected scene conforms and/or fails to conform to the socialpsychological principle you have identified Your written analysis should be organized into essay form, titled appropriately to reflect the content, approximately 4-6 pages, separated by paragraphs/idea. The use of a brief introduction to orient the reader is strongly recommended (do not start your paper by defining social psychology however), as well as a short conclusion section for any additional thoughts and to tie the paper together. You must include an APA cover page, and include any research you cited, including the film or television show, on the References page. Use Times New Roman font size 12, double spaced, with normal margins, and no extra spaces between paragraphs or sentences. This assignment is worth 20 points on your final grade. Analyses must be submitted on Blackboard as a Word document or .pdf (not .rtf or .pages) by the indicated due date. Late papers are not accepted at this time, so students should plan their writing time accordingly. Please note that I am aware of the specific social psychology film analyses that are widely available on the Internet- do not use them. Not only is this plagiarism a violation of the code of conduct, but it is counterproductive to the goal of identifying social psychology concepts on your own. Social psychology concepts are observable in the media you already enjoy!

Introduction
The main objective of social psychology is to provide an in-depth analysis of how the thoughts of mankind are framed within a social context by the pictured interaction with others in society (Guinote, 2007). On 16th August 2020, a drama series entitled Grand Army premiered on Netflix. The drama series boasts of five main characters: Leila, Sid, Joey, Dominick, and Jayson. Additionally, the environment for the whole plot is an academic institution. The institution is diverse since it has everyone from different walks of life. Additionally, the main characters are unique in their ways. In real life, Dominique is played by Odley Jean, who features as a staunch lover of basketball. On the other hand, Leila struggles so hard to fit in and adapt to her new environment. Her confusion in life pushes her into indulging herself in an entanglement with a "rapist" boyfriend (“‘Grand Army’ Tackles Big Issues, Realistically Portrays Teenage Experience,” 2021). It is also rather annoying that Leila portrays a toxic attitude in almost all her scenes in the drama series. The cast also features Odessa A’zion, who stars as Joey. She endeavors to achieve her purpose in Brooklyn’s Grand Army by advocating for equal student representation in the institution. She strongly advocates for ladies and women to express themselves in institutions that strongly advocate for zero-tolerance policies. There’s also Odley Jean, the star or rather the MVP of Grand Army. Dominique is a true epitome of what it takes to hustle and balance a social life with academics. The drama series depicts how she hustles to the extent of not getting any extra time to catch up with her school work, which makes her cheat in her examinations. Things finally turn out perfect when she decides to focus on her happiness.
Netflix strongly vouches for this drama series because of its creator as well. Grand Army was created by Katie Cappiello, who happens to be a professional teacher of theatre. Additionally, the directors behind the scenes are Beau Willimon and Joshua Donen. Much shout and accolade are showered upon her because of how she utterly kills the show with her actors' choice. Even though most of them set to debut on Hollywood's screens through Grand Army, they have genuinely given other actors a run for their money. Netflix strongly believes that this new drama series will keep most of its subscribers busy in the week of its premiere on the platform. Netflix has also not yet confirmed the renewal of season two of this drama series. Since the show's episodes have been set in the present day (2020), it also creates public awareness about the COVID 19 pandemic. This is essential to the whole world because the Netflix streaming platform has confirmed that it can be accessed worldwide. Therefore that justifies that the awareness created of COVID 19 shall reach almost all countries affected by the pandemic. The drama series is also worth celebrating because it focuses on issues in society like racism, LGBTQ, sexual harassment, and teenage struggles in life.
