Understanding our relationship with other individuals is essential for our everyday lives. It allows us to become better people, not only for ourselves but for the sake of others. Accordingly, this paper will focus on the use of logical reasoning to answer the question, “what does it mean to become a good friend.” Mainly, I would like to answer this question by looking at how we act and decide concerning our peers (D7) without falling into our fallacious reasoning (L3) and through the understanding of the most common fallacious thinking that we humans resort to (PC3). In the succeeding paragraphs of this paper, I will initially try to summarize some of the most common dilemmas regarding friendships, followed by ways to prevent falling into the trap of fallacious reasoning.
Friendships and their Nature
Compared to the nature of friendship, where two or more people would usually find themselves connected, the dynamics of friendship are one of the most challenging things to understand. Most studies would show that friendship happens because people find themselves similar to one another in terms of belief, humor, interest, or location, among others. Accordingly, these dynamic formations have long been studied in various fields and explained differently, such as the formation of symbolic boundaries between one’s group and the outsiders (Kogan et al., 2021). However, no matter how we explain such a concept, we would understand that we are only trying to find an objective analysis of how we can be good friends.
Friendships and Fallacious Reasoning
Should a good friend be honest, pacifying, tolerant, or lying to another friend? Imagine a scenario where your friend got into trouble for stealing a chocolate bar in the school cafeteria and got called to the principal’s office. Further, imagine if you were the one called by the principal. Should you lie for your friend, knowing that he may do it again, or should you tell the principal so that your friend would realize and be accountable for his mistakes? From this scenario alone, we could see how the idea of a ‘good friend’ would usually present an ethical dilemma that does not present a clear answer.
