The Life and Words of a ! King Woman- Marjorie Shostak
Shostak narrates her book in the present tense. The book shows Nisa's journey to the Dobe region in Africa in areas on the edges of the Kalahari Desert northwest of Botswana. Despite the book's narration being in the present tense, Nisa's accounts are in the past tense. In the introductory parts, Shostak describes how she was intrigued by the! Kung people and traveled, together with her husband, to Africa. Her chief focus was on the! Kung women. Upon her arrival in Africa, Shostak learns the language and proceeds to interview the local women. Her attention is then caught by a specific woman who goes by the name of Nisa. During the initial interviews, Nisa informs Shostak how her mother was to kill their younger brother immediately after his birth to allow her to nurse Nisa (Marjorie, 1981). The revelation introduces Shostak, and the readers, by extension, to how life was hard for them! Kung people.
Shostak divides her book into chapters, with each describing the interviews mostly with Nisa. Each chapter is creatively designed to show them or experience that mostly showed how life was hard in the Dobe region. Chapter three details the lives of the hunters and gatherers. In the chapter, we see how the local people celebrated the arrival of meat in the village, hunting prey, survival in times of severe draughts, and dealing with caterpillars during rainy seasons.
