Personal Reflection on the Self
Introduction
The sense of self for an individual is gained and developed based on social experiences that mould self-esteem, self-efficacy and the concept of self. The self, tries to maintain a constant relationship with varying aspects of the social world through developing identities that are defined and revealed in association with the social world. The interaction that occurs among self efficacy, the concept of self, self-esteem and influences from the environment induce the self external images in the social world that needs consistence adaptation, acknowledgement, accommodation and acceptance (Bolt, 2004). To get a clear reflection of self, an individual must comprehend the meaning of self as well as the concepts of self-esteem, self-efficacy and self-concept.
The self
Self in the social context can be described as a process in which individuals obtain the self sense through relationships, social influences and social experiences (Deckers, 2010). The elements that influence the individual’s sense of self in the social world include social comparisons, social roles, how one judge others, the individual failures and successes and they mould the growth and maturity of self (Myers, 2010). The self is also the most significant individual aspect and it answers the individual’s question on “Who am I” (Myers, 2010). The element of social comparison influences the sense of self as the individual defines the sense of self when making comparisons on how different he/she is from the social world (Myers, 2010). Roles that one plays in the social world also define the self, this is because the individual incorporates and adopt the social role into the self, for example, being a parent. The way other people judge an individual and the individual’s perception of the judgment, also add to the explanation of self. If the feedback received from the judgment is positive, the individual will experience positive feeling, if on the other hand the feedback is negative, a negative feeling is experienced. Failures and successes of an individual also define the self. Failures often build lower self-esteem while on the other hand successes lead to positive feelings of self, thus improving self-esteem (Myers, 2010).
Self esteem
The positive and negative evaluation of oneself is what describes an individual’s self esteem. This evaluation results to an individual judging the self either positively or negatively. Self-esteem can be defined as the feeling of love, self-worth, and considerations of an individual (Myers, 2010). As an individual, I consider my self-esteem being above average when thinking of self-awareness. This is as a result of my understanding of the universe, the feeling that my self-esteem is improved or reduced by a personal dialogue from an individual. I make my decisions, interactions and dealings with the social world on the basis of my own desires of becoming a better individual. Additionally, my need for understanding, love, achievement, compassion as well as my faith that it is for the good that all things happen informs my social interaction.
