Gambling is an act which many individuals easily become addicted to. It can either be for an opportunity to get money or taking a risk hoping for a positive outcome. Gambling, according to Oxford Living dictionary is playing games for a chance for money or taking a risky action in the hope of a desired result. Gambling can result in either a gain or a loss. People who often lose sometimes choose not to participate while others continue with the hope of gaining something one day. However, it is hard for individuals who gain from gambling to refrain from the act. This is because they are not contented with what they have and yearn for more. As a result, many of them end up being addicts thus it is hard to convince some of them of the risks involved.
DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria
Many gamblers prefer to risk something of value hoping to acquire something of superior value. People often gamble on games and events. Most of them rarely incur problems or issues while at it. The gambling behaviors of a person, however, make them develop extensive impairment. Once an individual sees that gambling helps enrich them, he/she will choose to risk whatever it takes to continue earning more thus become addicts steadily. Conversely, gaining something through gambling is often by luck. Addicts to gambling are apt to have gambling disorders as they become enthralled by it. Gambling disorders tend to be persistent and recurring hence brings about a lot of disasters such as disagreements in the family, friends and relatives, and disrupt one from meeting their objectives among others. Gambling disorder or pathological gambling is a psychiatric condition characterized by persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behaviour CITATION Mat14 \l 1033 (Matteo Lupi, 2014).
When they lose, gamblers chase what they have lost by opting to take greater risks or place larger bets to disengage a loss or recurring losses. They at times decide to leave their gambling strategies and aim to win back what they lost before all together. Gamblers may choose to lie to their families, friends and relatives to hide their association with gambling. They may engage in illegal activities such as theft and deceit or even choose to cover up for one’s mischief to get the money. Additionally, they may turn to family members and friends for financial assistance which has been brought about by gambling.

Any individual can engage in gambling irrespective of their age. Children may learn of the act from their parents or relatives. Teenagers may also learn about it from the internet or their friends. However, people need to know that there are a lot of risk factors associated with gambling. Some of them include:
