Offsetting and Limiting Ocean Acidification
Many people believe that climate change is the chief consequence of global warming due to carbon emissions from fossil fuels. However, ocean acidification has been known as one of the major causes of global warming. The oceans are regarded as carbon sinks because they absorb a large percentage of the carbon emitted from human activities. However, as the amount of carbon being emitted increases, the chemical composition of ocean water is also changing. As carbon emitted is absorbed into the ocean water, carbonic acid is formed. With the increasing acidification in the oceans, the pH balance destabilizes, causing harm to millions of organisms.
Ocean acidification is an imminent danger that co-occurs with global warming. The increasing rate of carbon emissions continues to affect organisms in the atmosphere. As the concentration of carbon dioxide continues to increase, ocean temperatures are also rising. Although warming and acidification are different, they both affect the ocean's chemical composition, detriment ocean life (Lenton et al., 2018). The increase in temperatures also influences the rate of absorption of carbon dioxide and other related gases. This implies that oceans in polar regions acidify faster compared to those in tropical zones.
Many initiatives can be done to reduce the rate of acidification and limit further damage to the ecosystem. First, it is vital to acknowledge that acidification affects diverse aspects of the economy, such as tourism, fisheries, food supply, and worsens global warming. This is because acidified oceans are incapable of absorbing more carbon dioxide, severing the accumulation of carbon in the atmosphere. Unless carbon emissions are limited, ocean acidification will continue to rise. Therefore, it is vital to reduce the accumulation of carbon within the atmosphere. There is also a need to limit climate change and ensure that drastic actions are taken against the overuse of fossil fuels (Union of Concerned ...
