Dr. Finis Southworth, the Chief Technology Officer Emeritus, made a presentation on climate change outlining the causes and solutions to arresting the problem. On the key factors that result in climate change, Southworth points out that greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are responsible for this global challenge. By economic sector, electricity and heat production and agriculture, forestry, and other land use are the leading industries in global greenhouse gas emissions with 25 percent and 24 percent, respectively. The other three sectors include industrial production with 21 percent, transport industry with 14 percent, and other energy industry with 10 percent. From 1800 to the year 2000, the world has witnessed an increase in carbon emissions to 10 billion metric tons per year, with coal and petroleum being the leading contributors. Other key players resulting in carbon emissions include natural gas, cement production, and gas flaring. These figures continue to rise, with 2018 projections indicating that the global carbon emissions would hit 37 million tons of CO2. Between 1751 and 2020, the United States, the rest of Europe & Eurasia, and China have been the leading countries with the highest cumulative carbon emissions of 24.4 percent, 15.9 percent, and 13.8 percent, respectively.
