NAFTA came with theories that it would provide the Mexican producers with subsidized markets and free trade and expose them to external markets that never happened. Before the establishment of NAFTA, Mexico was rich in producing fresh agricultural products. Two decades after the establishment of NAFTA, the small-scale farming of corn, indigenous ways of food consumption, and the health of the Mexican community were threatened. NAFTA used Mexican producers only to benefit American producers. According to Gálvez (2018), today, Mexico’s market, which used to be the largest farm producer, has been replaced with processed food from the United States of America. Through NAFTA, the American producers have unlimited access to the same produce growing scarce in Mexico.
NAFTA has altered the Mexican produce market in a way it cannot compete with America in the name of exposing them to globalization. NAFTA limited the Mexican market exposure resulting in increased poverty levels in Mexico.
