Liberals believe that international institutions play a significant role in cooperation among different states. With diplomacy and interdependence, nations have the chance of reducing conflicts. Countries can interact through financial, economic, and financial means. Moreover, security is always the main goal of nation-to nation interactions. Therefore, with proper diplomacy, liberals believe that nations can work together to reduce conflicts and maximize prosperity. Some of the examples of Intergovernmental organizations include European Union, the World Bank, and United Nations. This essay will discuss some of the reasons a leader of a country urges membership of his or her country to an intergovernmental organization.
One of the major reason a leader urges for membership to an intergovernmental organization is to boost the security of that particular country. International peace and security are very important for any country (Gutner, 2016, pg. 24). For example, these are some of the benefits nations get from UN membership. Liberals believe that it is important for nations to develop friendly relations with other nations. These memberships enable states to achieve international cooperation. In return, it is easy for a nation to address social, economic, humanitarian problems. Another reason why a leader would join an intergovernmental organization is to promote respect for fundamental human rights and freedom (Gutner, 2016, pg. 19). For example, the United Nations has encouraged peaceful resolution of crises in East Timor and Mozambique.
